Landmark Spotlight: Upper Newport Bay

A staple destination in the community for walking, wildlife watching and catching up with friends, Upper Newport Bay offers one of the most peaceful natural escapes in Newport Beach. Its sweeping views and serene open space make it easy to immerse yourself in nature just steps from nearby neighborhoods. With paved walking and biking paths, plus an educational center, the Bay has become a true community hub where people come together to connect, exercise and learn.

Not only is it a popular destination for people, but it is also a popular destination for wildlife! A vital coastal habitat, OC Parks’ Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve spans approximately 135 acres, while the surrounding Ecological Reserve brings the total protected open space to nearly 1,000 acres. With stunning bluffs that frame the Bay, the destination is one of Southern California’s largest remaining coastal wetlands and one of North America’s premier bird‑watching destinations.

During winter migration, as many as 35,000 birds may be present at once. The Bay supports six rare or endangered species, including the Light‑Footed Clapper Rail, Brown Pelican, Belding’s Savannah Sparrow, Black Rail, Peregrine Falcon and California Least Tern. Three additional sensitive species, the California Gnatcatcher, San Diego Cactus Wren and Burrowing Owl, also rely on the surrounding bluffs.

Two key plant communities also thrive here: grasslands and coastal sage scrub. The Bay also shelters the endangered Saltmarsh Bird’s Beak, underscoring its designation as a critical estuary and one of the most pristine remaining estuaries in Southern California.

Built into the side of a bluff, the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center is a 10,000‑square‑foot educational facility open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Interactive exhibits highlight estuary ecology, wildlife and conservation. Visitors can learn about life in and around an estuary and why this specific estuary is so important, giving visitors a deeper appreciation for the Bay’s significance.
