Landmark Spotlight: Red Rock Wilderness

Located atop striking sandstone and cobble bluffs, Red Rock Wilderness is the newest addition to OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. Spanning roughly 1,500 acres, this breathtaking, rugged landscape invites outdoor enthusiasts to immerse themselves in nature.
The area’s signature red striking color and jagged formations come from centuries of sediment oxidation, erosion and the gradual uplift of the Santa Ana Mountains. Situated on the ancient Sespe Formation, estimated to be 20 to 40 million years old, Red Rock Wilderness was once home to prehistoric creatures like early rhinos and crocodiles.
Today, it serves as a protected and preserved natural habitat for a variety of plants and animals, including bobcats, mule deer, grey foxes and diverse bird species. Year-round, visitors can spot coast live oaks, prickly pear cactus, coastal sage scrub and native grasses. In spring, the hills burst into color with California poppies, lupine and other wildflowers.
With over eight miles of multi-use trails, the wilderness offers six newly established routes ranging from easy strolls to challenging treks. These trails are ideal for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding with scenic overlooks of the Santa Ana Mountains.

Opened to the public in 2024, Red Rock Wilderness is part of the 25,000 acres donated by the Irvine Company for conservation and recreation. Now owned by OC Parks and managed in partnership with Irvine Ranch Conservancy, the previously closed-off area is open for guided activities and self-guided Wilderness Access Days.
