Landmark Spotlight: Quail Hill

Quail Hill in Orange County is one of those rare places where you can feel immersed in nature in just a matter of moments. It is a pocket of wildland that invites nature lovers, adventurers and both beginner and seasoned hikers into its rolling hills to explore.
Nestled at the base of Irvine’s southern hills, the City of Irvine’s Quail Hill sits within one of California’s most threatened ecosystems: coastal sage scrub. This habitat supports important native animals like the California gnatcatcher, western fence lizards, cottontail rabbits, and a variety of native bees and butterflies
Quail Hill is also known as one of Orange County’s most accessible gateways into the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. The Quail Hill Trailhead provides a great starting point to connect with southern Irvine’s extensive trail network, including routes into Bommer Canyon, Shady Canyon and more rugged wilderness areas. It is one of the few wildlands you can visit on a whim, no registration or guided activity required, allowing visitors to enjoy the landscape entirely at their own pace.
The ideal “first step” into Irvine’s open space is the Quail Hill Loop, a 2‑mile natural dirt trail that circles the base of the preserve. With minimal elevation gain and wide, open sightlines, it is one of the most beginner‑friendly hikes in Orange County:
- Easy terrain perfect for new hikers
- Open daily from dawn to dusk
- Family‑friendly and stroller‑friendly in dry conditions
- Quick access from the 405 and nearby neighborhoods
Visitors to the Quail Hill Loop Trail can enjoy Irvine’s self‑guided audio tour by dialing 949‑743‑5943 to hear interpreters and researchers share insights about points of interest along the route. The free tour can be accessed anytime from any phone, with numbered prompts. It’s also available in podcast format for those who prefer listening on a computer or mobile device.
Quail Hill is more than a scenic loop, it is also an active restoration site. The City of Irvine and Irvine Ranch Conservancy are working together on a multi‑year effort to expand native tree canopy, restore habitat and reconnect wildlife corridors. Visitors can already see new interpretive panels explaining restoration work, along with native species like coast live oak, Mexican elderberry and laurel sumac taking root. As restoration continues, native wildlife benefits too, with birds, lizards and pollinators returning as habitats improves. Because the project spans more than a decade, every visit offers a glimpse into the ongoing progress.

Quail Hill is also a hub for community involvement. Volunteers help plant trees and maintain restoration sites, while public programs, from beginner hikes to nature education, make the preserve a welcoming space for all ages. Upcoming volunteer opportunities and guided programs can be found at letsgooutside.org.
Take your next opportunity to discover Quail Hill and experience one of Southern California’s most accessible natural spaces!
