Landmark Spotlight: Gypsum Canyon Wilderness

Discover prehistoric rock formations and sweeping canyon views at OC Parks’ Gypsum Canyon Wilderness, a 500‑acre area within the Irvine Ranch Open Space. Featuring six miles of trails, this rugged landscape invites hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians to explore one of the region’s most geologically fascinating areas.

Shaped 16 to 20 million years ago, Gypsum Canyon Wilderness’s dramatic cobble and sandstone bluffs formed during a time when early camels, horses, rhinos and saber‑toothed deer roamed what is now Orange County. These ancient formations now rise above large sycamores and coast live oak-filled meadows. Today, its protected and preserved native habitats are home to an abundance of wildlife, including mule deer, red-tailed hawks, California gnatcatchers, bobcats and countless other species. 

Seven established trails, ranging from easy to moderate, weave through the canyon, offering opportunities for quiet nature walks, scenic rides and panoramic viewpoints. Two designated overlooks provide sweeping views of the surrounding canyons, the Santa Ana Mountains and the colorful rock formations. In spring, visitors can enjoy California poppies and seasonal wildflowers filling the hillsides with vibrant color.

OC Parks and Irvine Ranch Conservancy prioritize the balance of public access with the long‑term environmental health of the land. That is why Gypsum Canyon Wilderness is currently only accessible through scheduled guided and self‑guided programs with advance registration, including docent‑led activities for interpretive exploration and popular Wilderness Access Days for independent exploration.
