Back on the Trail: Understanding Difficulty Ratings

Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) invites everyone to get out on the land and join an activity in the year ahead. Whether you’re brand‑new to the outdoors or a seasoned nature adventurer, there is something for every interest and experience level.
To better support participants, IRC recently updated the Hiking and Fitness Difficulty Ratings featured on LetsGoOutside.org for activities and programs led by IRC‑Certified Volunteers. These updates were in response to feedback from volunteer leads and participants. The updates ensure the ratings accurately help people choose the outdoor adventure that best matches their comfort level. The ratings consider average fitness levels along with route features such as elevation, shade, pace and the number of planned stops. The goal is to better reflect the full range of difficulty across IRC activities and programs, taking into account that new trails, new leaders and evolving experiences continue to shape the lineup.

Please refer to the full Difficulty Rating System descriptions online. In the meantime, take a look below for a brief overview and upcoming activities and programs from each category.
