Landmark Spotlight: Bommer Canyon Preserve

Within the 40,000 acres that make up the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks, is an area known for its vibrant nature and rich history, Bommer Canyon Preserve. Attracting walkers, hikers and nature enthusiasts, this historical nature sanctuary spans over 4,000 acres.

The land was acquired in the early 1800’s and was used primarily for sheep ranching. It then became a hub for cattle, sharecropping and agriculture. At one point, Bommer Canyon Preserve was considered the headquarters for the southern ranching operation that performed various ranch duties.

Today, visitors can spot various relics of life and history throughout the Preserve. Visitors can also check out the newly-opened Bommer Canyon Nature Garden, open seven days a week for self-guided exploration to further learn about one of Orange County’s oldest cattle ranches and former farmlands.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the area is also home to beautiful trails that welcome walkers, hikers and bikers any time of the year. Whether you are an advanced mountain bike rider, an experienced cardio hiker or enjoy a leisurely-paced walk, there are several trails and activities to suit any type of outdoor activity!

Bommer Canyon Preserve is open daily for the public to enjoy self-guided hikes from dawn to dusk on specific trails. Additionally, the area hosts Wilderness Access Days that give nature lovers the chance to explore its network of outstanding trails and views. The next two Wilderness Access Days: Bommer Canyon are upcoming, on Saturday, September 21 and Saturday, October 19.

Beyond its recreational appeal, Bommer Canyon Preserve is also an important preservation area for many local plants and wildlife, including several endangered species. A part of the City of Irvine’s Open Space Preserve, the city and Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) works to protect its natural beauty and maintain a healthy habitat for native plants and animals.
