How to Experience the Perseid Meteor Shower in Orange County’s Wildlands
The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most popular and anticipated celestial events of the year. With roughly 100 meteors streaking across the sky every hour, it is known as one of the brightest and most abundant meteor showers of the year. The annual event occurs when the Earth passes through a large debris field left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet. With its peak overnight from August 12 to August 13, it will draw observers from near and far to witness the spectacular celestial show.
In Orange County, the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks offer some of the region’s best places to experience the night sky, immersing visitors in nature without requiring a long trip from home. With minimal light pollution, these local wildlands provide ideal conditions for nighttime stargazing and special twilight events like meteor‑shower viewing.
Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) hosts special late‑night programs throughout the year that provide rare access to dark, unobstructed vantage points across the local wildlands, including events specifically designed for viewing the Perseid meteor shower.
- August 12 – Perseids Meteor Shower: Hike and View in Black Star
- August 14 – Nature Journaling during the Perseids Meteor Shower
These guided programs are extremely popular, as self-guided access is not permitted in the Landmarks after park closures, so planning ahead for next year is encouraged. If you missed out on the meteor‑shower viewing activities, additional nighttime opportunities can be found at LetsGoOutside.org.
IRC also recommends viewing the meteor shower from other nearby locations within driving distance, such as the high desert of Joshua Tree National Park or Anza‑Borrego Desert State Park, or higher elevations in the San Bernardino National Forest, Santa Monica Mountains or San Gabriel Mountains, which are all accessible and open to the public after dark.
Take this opportunity to step away from city lights and experience a breathtaking cosmic display!
