Sahara Mustard, Brassica tournefortii
Sahara mustard is an annual herb with stems up to 3’ tall. It produces small, dull, yellow flowers and has basal, deeply lobed leaves 3-12” in length. It is most commonly found in wind-blown sand deposits and disturbed sites such as roadsides and abandoned fields. Dense strands suppress native wildflowers and monopolize available soil moisture by maturing earlier than native species do. Sahara mustard also increases fuel loads and fire hazards in coastal sage scrub.
