Program Manager, Fire Prevention & Management

About Irvine Ranch Conservancy: For more than 15 years, Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) has been responsible for restoring, protecting, and maintaining more than 30,000 acres of protected natural lands in Southern California, one of the densest urban areas in the country. These lands are teeming with life — diverse plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. They need expert care to protect and restore them so they can continue to provide our communities with all the benefits that only wild, open spaces can. As an innovator in the management of Southern California’s urban wildlands, IRC works in partnership with landowners, community leaders, and residents in Orange County and beyond to engage, educate, and foster a shared vision for responsible, long-term care and protection of the natural resources we all share.

About the Program: Too-frequent catastrophic wildfires threaten the well-being of both wildlands and adjacent human communities in Southern California. The goal of IRC’s Fire Prevention and Management program is to reduce the frequency and severity of wildfires on urban wildlands, including more than 30,000 acres that we manage on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. We focus on a multi-faceted approach, working with a broad regional network of partners, that is based in science and extensive field experience. Program priorities include coalition building, engaging the community (including Orange County Fire Watch), and developing projects that prevent wildfire ignitions and facilitate resilient communities.

About the Position: IRC has an opening for a full-time Fire Prevention and Management Program Manager. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a “start-up” mindset who can initiate program and project development and lead the program to outstanding results. The Fire Prevention and Management program is a new program, and the Program Manager will have several major initial responsibilities. These include implementing IRC’s 3-year Regional Forest and Fire Capacity (RFFC) grant, overseeing the OC Fire Watch program, and interacting with regional partner organizations to develop programs and projects.

The Successful Candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or graduate degree (preferred); a minimum of five years of work experience with related skills and responsibilities developing project plans and work plans, creating and managing budgets, developing and managing successful grant programs, managing staff, building partnerships, and developing and implementing projects with established timelines and deliverables. These include the following experience, skills, abilities, and knowledge:
  •  Outstanding program and project development skills, including developing projects and workplans from concept to implementation with timelines and deliverables.
  • Exceptional partnership and collaboration skills, including high-level interactions with public and private organizations.
  • Experience managing staff, including performance management.
  • Experience fundraising, including public and foundation grant proposal development, compliance, and report writing.
  • Communication proficiency, both verbal and written; ability to communicate complex issues simply and effectively
  • Knowledge of ecological/conservation principles and familiarity with the local environment.
  • Solid technical competency and ability to learn and deploy technical concepts rapidly. Extensive experience in wildfire management or fire ecology not required

 Salary Range: $64,386 - $76,755 annual

Benefits: IRC offers excellent, industry-leading benefits including paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave; medical, dental, and vision insurance; health savings account (HSA) with employer contribution; life and short- and long-term disability insurance; 401K plan with employer match; flexible spending account and dependent care spending plan (FSA); and long-term care insurance with employer contribution.  For more details, click here.
