Program Coordinator, Plant Materials Development (Volunteers)
About Irvine Ranch Conservancy: For more than 15 years, Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) has been responsible for restoring, protecting, and maintaining more than 30,000 acres of protected natural lands in Southern California, one of the densest urban areas in the country. These lands are teeming with life — diverse plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. They need expert care to protect and restore them so they can continue to provide our communities with all the benefits that only wild, open spaces can. As an innovator in the management of Southern California’s urban wildlands, IRC works in partnership with landowners, community leaders, and residents in Orange County and beyond to engage, educate, and foster a shared vision for responsible, long-term care and protection of the natural resources we all share.
About the Program: Plant materials development is the intentional cultivation of seeds, seedlings, and container plants in support of ecological restoration efforts. IRC’s program uses wild seed collection, in combination with traditional farming and nursery practices, to ensure that each restoration includes a diverse set of plant species that are adapted to local conditions. IRC's program makes extensive use of trained volunteers at its farm and nurseries, and uses these sites to engage with the community during regularly scheduled volunteer days and special events.
About the Position: IRC has an opening for a full-time Program Coordinator on the Plant Materials Development team. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to work outdoors and use a variety of skills, and who enjoys working with people. Depending on the season and the needs of the program, the Program Coordinator will lead teams of trained and experienced volunteers at IRC’s native seed farm and nurseries, plan and coordinate the work of volunteers working independently, and conduct regular training for volunteers new to the program. The Program Coordinator will also lead regular public work days, where they will use interpretation to help volunteers and the public understand ecological concepts related to conservation, ecological restoration, and plant science. When not working with volunteers or the public, the Program Coordinator will work independently, or will coordinate work crews. Weekend work will be required for this position, as well as occasional evening work.
The Successful Candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, ecology, restoration ecology, or similar field; a minimum of two years of work experience in a related field; and the following experience, skills, abilities, and knowledge:
Salary Range: $21.67 - $23.88 per hour ($45,070 - $49,669 per year)
Benefits: IRC offers industry-leading benefits including paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave; medical, dental, and vision insurance; health savings account (HSA) with employer contribution; life and short- and long-term disability insurance; 401k plan with employer match, flexible spending account (FSA); and dependent care spending plan, and long term care insurance with employer contribution.
