The City of Irvine and Irvine Ranch Conservancy Host Earth Day Celebration
A Day in Honor of Mother Earth
The Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) and the City of Irvine are hosting an event dedicated to the Earth. On Saturday, April 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the public is invited to come out and enjoy the many wonders of nature in honor of our Earth. The event will be held at Bommer Canyon (11 Bommer Road, Irvine). This location is rich in both Irvine Ranch lore and nature's bounty and is full of centuries-old oak, sycamore groves and rough rock outcroppings.
The day will consist of various activities for the entire family, including guided hikes, open hiking (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. only), mountain biking, nature-related lectures, a puppet show, crafts and activity booths and a rock wall.
“The Earth Day celebration is intended to encourage awareness of our planet and what it has to offer by physically getting out and experiencing it through hiking and mountain biking,” says Janet Martell, City of Irvine Program Coordinator. “In addition to the various activities that day, participants will be able to learn about the ways they can take care of the planet by recycling and composting.”
Participants MUST check in and register at the Bommer Canyon Cattle Camp prior to accessing the trail system. Upon registration, participants will be given a day use pass that must be carried, and be visible, at all times while in the Preserve. Helmets are required for biking on the trails. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Make sure to dress appropriately for a day of outdoor fun and wear sturdy, hiking shoes, a hat and plenty of sun protection. Also, bring water and light trail snacks to munch on, but remember that you must take out all trash with you-“pack it in, pack it out.” Food will also be available for purchase by Sprouts. Parking is limited so carpool or ride your bike to the venue.
All activities are free, but pre-registration is recommended at www.irvineranchwildlands.org/activities/index.asp.
