Novice runners and nature enthusiasts prepare for a fast-paced trek in Weir Canyon, which is home to rolling hills, extensive oak woodlands, and perennial grasslands. Join us on April 10 at 6 p.m. for this three mile adventure. This beginner trail run does not go as far or as fast as the more advanced runs; however, it is still a very strenuous program and you must have some trail running experience.
This area is part of the historic trail route that oxen teams traveled in the 1800's when they delivered the farmers' crops to the market in San Juan Capistrano. Weir Canyon is also where duckbilled dinosaur fossils and Native American bedrock mortars have been found.
Your run will take you through beautiful oak woodlands and coastal sage scrub habitat. This activity is only an hour long, but it is still an excellent workout.
The trail in this area is mostly flat, with a few mild up and downhill portions. In the evening, it is common to see deer, coyote and skunk traveling though this region. Also, watch for red-tailed hawks, common in the area, as many call this canyon home. In addition, the trails will be plastered with multi-colored wildflowers of all varieties. Keep your eyes open for poppies, lupines, morning glories and many more!
