The Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks are home to a variety of diverse habitats within Orange County, bringing many opportunities to experience and learn from the wonders of nature! Expand your learning experience with nature while exploring the perfect outdoor classroom. From the beautiful mountains and trails to the unique flora and fauna found across the Landmarks, there are so many fun and exciting features to discover.

Irvine Ranch Conservancy, along with OC Parks, the City of Irvine and the City of Newport Beach, offers a variety of free educational and interactive activities on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks that are sure to enrich every visitor’s experience with nature. Next time you log into LetsGoOutside.org, make sure to explore all of the interpretive activities offered on the land.

Interpretive activities are a fun way to engage with the land and its inhabitants. With each activity, participants can expect to learn about a range of topics including birding, wildflowers, geology, history and local culture, wildlife tracking and plant identification. Choose from a wide array of activities to absorb the fresh Orange County air and uncover the incredible trails throughout the Natural Landmarks.

Nature lovers can also enjoy stewardship activities, like planting native plants or harvesting seeds, that allow you to get your hands dirty while learning about the land. The Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s Native Seed Farm, located in Irvine, provides year-round stewardship opportunities for the public to actively participate in the restoration of sensitive habitats. Explore volunteer opportunities with the Native Seed Farm and learn how these tiny seeds have a big impact on restoring the Landmarks.

Bring your little ones for a fun, interactive activity to learn about nature and enjoy the outdoors with Wild Tales on Friday, September 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Hosted at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center every Friday morning, Wild Tales is the perfect learning opportunity for parents and their young children to experience storytelling, a guided nature walk, hands-on activities and arts and crafts. The class includes a $5 cash fee per child to participate in the craft.

Spend the morning outdoors with a moderately paced hike around the Mesa Loop Trail! During the 3-mile Mesa Loop Hike on Sunday, September 22, hikers ages 12 and older will learn about the unique local flora and fauna that call the canyons their home. Remember to pack plenty of water and sunscreen and wear closed-toe shoes for the trek.

Families looking for a fun outdoor learning experience for their homeschoolers can celebrate the first day of Fall with the Equinox Science Celebration on Monday, September 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Activities will include an exciting science experiment that can only be completed at exactly 12 noon on the equinox. All ages are welcome to join the celebration to learn about astronomy, geometry and physics.

Have fun learning on the weekend and enjoy an afternoon with fun craft activities at Crafty Kids Sundays on Sunday, September 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children of all ages are welcome to participate in free craft activities and must be accompanied by an adult.
