The acorns collected by the Conservancy are sourced locally from oak trees throughout the area, giving them a greater chance of success due to acclimation to local climate and soil. After the acorns are collected, they will then be planted at the Augustine Nursery, where staff and volunteers will assist in tending and growing the acorns to seedlings until they are ready for planting. Restoration projects such as this allow Irvine Ranch Conservancy to expand its work of restoring habitats that support local wildlife and plant species.
After the acorns are prepped at the Augustine Nursery, they will grow into seedlings that will then be transferred to Limestone Canyon for planting. The acorn seedlings will be cared for over the next few months, with a goal of being planted on the land at the end of the year.
Irvine Ranch Conservancy invites the public to get involved in the entire process, from seed to tree! Get an exclusive look into the fascinating restoration process while having fun participating in stewardship. Connect with nature and learn about the oak woodland habitats that these acorns will help preserve.
