
Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching which means Orange County residents can look forward to clear skies and warmer weather in Southern California. Signaling the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day weekend invites nature lovers of all ages to tie up their hiking boots for a trip to the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Whether visitors choose to roll up their sleeves for a stewardship program, get their heart pumping during a hiking adventure, or enjoy self-guided access during Wilderness Access Day, there are several options for outdoor enthusiasts to get outside and celebrate the warmer weather!
Hikers can get fit on the Landmarks just in time for summer during the Tuesday Morning Fitness Hike on Paved Hicks Haul Road activity. On Tuesday, May 29 from 7:30 – 10 a.m. fitness enthusiasts can hit the pavement during this morning fitness walk and choose between a 3, 6, or 8 mile route. This hike is catered to those who are looking for a great workout while experiencing nature without the dirt! Participants can look forward to panoramic views of Orange County and the Santa Ana Mountains while spotting wildlife including hawks, deer, and lizards.
On Wednesday, May 30 from 8 a.m. 1 p.m. hikers can enjoy the warm weather during the Mid Week Hike through the City of Irvine’s Orchard Hills and Loma Ridge. Visitors will hike 10 miles around an avocado grove and enjoy sweeping views of all of Orange County. The hike involves several steep climbs and descents and is led at a moderate pace of approximately 3mph.
Hikers, bikers, and equestrians can keep the Memorial Day celebration going all week long by joining the Wilderness Access Day program in OC Parks’ Limestone Canyon. On Saturday, June 2 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. During this program, outdoorsmen and women of all ages and interests can enjoy self-guided access to Limestone Canyon’s multiple trail systems while enjoying their natural surroundings and the geologic wonder popularly known as “The Sinks.”
Enjoy the warmer weather on the Landmarks this Memorial Day weekend and beyond! Remember to wear sunscreen (even in the late afternoon and early evening), and don’t forget to pack water, snacks, and wear layers and appropriate shoes. Most activities are free with required pre-registration, which closes at 4 p.m. the day prior to each event. Some programs are suitable for children 12 and over, and children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
