Discover the unique features of the open spaces and register for a hiking & fitness program

The Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks offer the community a multitude of trails with diverse flora, fauna, and geological wonders to discover. As the weather cools down, community members can increase their heart rates and enjoy the fresh air of the outdoors by participating in a variety of hiking & fitness activities offered on the open spaces, many of which are free and open to the public with pre-registration.

Whether visitors are looking to challenge themselves with a cardio hike or simply enjoy the outdoors, there are numerous programs tailored to a wide variety of interests and skill levels. Outdoor enthusiasts can review the difficulty rating listed with each activity to better gauge which program is right for their fitness level. The difficulty ratings are organized between levels 1 – 5 and based on criteria including distance, average pace, estimated stops, accumulated elevation, steepness of ascents and descents, and trail surface and type.

Those looking to incorporate fitness into their weekly routine can head to Irvine for the After Work Fitness Hike on Paved Hicks Haul Road program on Monday, September 17 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Every Monday evening hikers can start their week with beautiful sunset views overlooking Orange County. This level 3 hike encourages visitors ages 16 and up to travel 3.5 miles to the top of Loma Ridge at their own pace. Fitness buffs looking to start their day on the Landmarks can join the Tuesday Morning Fitness Hike on Paved Hicks Haul Road activity on Tuesday, September 18 from 7:30 – 10 a.m. This level 3 hike is offered every Tuesday for hikers ages 16 and above. Participants are welcome to choose between a 3, 6, or 8 mile route depending on their comfort level.

Visitors looking to find peace in nature can join the Tai Chi in the Canyon program on Monday, September 24 from 9 – 11 a.m. in OC Parks’ Black Star Canyon Wilderness Park. Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese exercise known for its slow and calming movements, is enhanced with the natural surroundings of Black Star Canyon. Beginners and seasoned pros alike are welcome to join the two-hour session. The first hour will be dedicated to teaching beginner students Yang-style Tai Chi moves while the second hour focuses on more advanced sequences. Students are welcome to participate or simply observe and enjoy the fresh air during the program.

Trail trekkers can explore the City of Irvine’s Orchard Hills during the Mid-Week Hike: Orchard Hills program. The level 4 hike will encourage visitors to recharge their batteries while hiking around an avocado grove to the edge of the open space preserve and up to Loma Ridge. Hikers should note the route involves 10-12 miles with several steep climbs and descents and will be led at approximately 3 mph.

Enjoy fresh air and exercise on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks during the fall season and beyond! Most activities are free with required pre-registration, which closes at 4 p.m. the day prior to each event. Some programs are suitable for children 8 and over, and children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. I'm a 90-year old walker. Would love to do Orchard Hills easy walk in the morning in October. Thank you.
