PictureBommer Canyon
Happy New Year! With the holiday rush over and  the new year upon us, it’s time to start fresh and think about what goals you want to accomplish during the year ahead. Orange County residents have the privilege of great weather all year long, so why not take the time to get out and experience the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks with easy 7-day access hiking trails?

Even though some trails on the Landmarks might be considered “easy,” it does not mean they are boring. There are a variety of easy 7-day access trails on the Landmarks that provide beginning hikers with the perfect introduction to native habitats - some rare and only found in Southern California. Easy trails can be used as a stepping stone into hiking and can also become part of a regular routine to get outside and experience the natural beauty in our own backyard.

Bond Fire on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks

12/10/2020

On Wednesday, December 2, the Bond Fire broke out near Silverado Canyon and Black Star Canyon. As of Wednesday, December 9, 90% of the Bond Fire has been contained, burning 6,686 acres of land in the area.

All evacuation orders in Silverado Canyon and surrounding communities have been lifted, but the public should remain vigilant and adhere to any road closures. Fire crews working on infrastructure and unseen dangers may remain present in and around the burn areas. Please stay clear of the burn areas. Accessing these areas is not only extremely unsafe, but also damaging to the land, making recovery and restoration efforts more challenging.

Festive Flora on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks

Crisp mornings and cold nights are signs that winter is on its way to the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks! Even though Orange County is not a traditional winter wonderland, we can still experience festive winter flora throughout the local native habitats.

Native plants that have been dormant throughout summer and fall come to life during winter months - one of those plants being the colorful Toyon shrub, also known as the Christmas Berry. Toyon can grow up to 30 feet tall on moist slopes or canyon bottoms and produces bright red berries that resemble holly berries. This native plant is a prominent species in the coastal sage scrub community and is a part of drought-adapted chaparral and mixed oak woodland habitats. The brightly colored berries provide a food source for a variety of bird species and some mammals.
