Wet Weather Safety on the Landmarks

11/26/2019

PictureRain helps flora and fauna on the Landmarks thrive
Winter weather has made its way to Orange County, bringing heavy rainfall throughout the region. Rain helps the flora and fauna on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks thrive. It can also create unsafe trail conditions and other potential safety issues. In anticipation of wet weather, Irvine Ranch Conservancy and its landowning partners, OC Parks, City of Irvine and the City of Newport Beach, are working diligently to evaluate potential storm damage and reduce long-term effects to the local trail system. Irvine Ranch Conservancy urges visitors to do their part to help minimize rain damage by understanding wet trail conditions and abiding by closures to the trail system to help maintain the health of local habitats.

During the cool winter months, trails require downtime to dry out after rainfall, which could close trails for a few days following a storm. While many trails might appear dry at the trailhead, there are likely to be sections of the trail that collect moisture and remain muddy. It is important that visitors stay off the trails during this time and allow for the dirt to dry out completely, to ensure the longevity for public use and public safety. Ignoring closures could result in dangerous situations for nature enthusiasts, as well as park rangers and first responders.

Thankful for Our Partners

11/21/2019

PictureOur partners make it possible to enjoy a variety of activities on the land
Irvine Ranch Conservancy is thankful for its landowning partners: OC Parks, City of Irvine and City of Newport Beach

Like many of you, we at the Irvine Ranch Conservancy have much to be thankful for this holiday season, especially our partners.  Without OC Parks, the City of Irvine, and the City of Newport Beach, we wouldn’t be able to go outside with you and enjoy the natural wonders of our local wildlands.  We are so thankful that their partnerships allows us to do the important work of restoring and protecting the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks, and we are thankful for the community (that means you!) that we have all created together in that pursuit.

Together with OC Parks, City of Irvine and the City of Newport Beach, the Irvine Ranch Conservancy has been able to:

Irvine Ranch Conservancy Staff Spotlight: Nicole Tamura, Program Coordinator

11/6/2019

PictureProgram Coordinator Nicole Tamura
Irvine Ranch Conservancy takes great pride in its habitat restoration projects that help to revive the ecosystems within urban wildlands. These projects thrive through the efforts of our staff members like Nicole Tamura, who has worked with Irvine Ranch Conservancy for the past three years .

As a Program Coordinator for Irvine Ranch Conservancy, Nicole manages the monitoring of projects focused on specific success criteria. Nicole also collects and analyzes data on plant communities, wildlife diversity, and ecological health.

“I love the diversity of work I get to do with Irvine Ranch Conservancy,” said Tamura. “I always have exciting tasks, whether it’s counting songbirds in Limestone Canyon, identifying pollinators under a microscope, or frolicking through the foothills to take vegetation data on our habitat restoration projects.”

Irvine Ranch Conservancy Celebrates 10th Anniversary of the Native Seed Farm

11/1/2019

PictureVolunteer tending native plants at the Farm
Nearly a decade ago, Irvine Ranch Conservancy was faced with the challenge of acquiring plant materials like seed and container plants for habitat restoration projects throughout the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Irvine Ranch Conservancy staff put their heads together and proposed an innovative idea of collecting seeds from the wild and growing them on a farm. Once grown, the plants would be harvested for more seed and used in restoration projects throughout the Landmarks. This idea led to the creation of the Native Seed Farm.

This fall season marks the 10th anniversary of the Native Seed Farm and Irvine Ranch Conservancy is excited to celebrate the significant growth and impact the Farm has had in restoring the Landmarks, as well as educating the community.

“The Farm was started as a direct response to an issue, but it has evolved into a community outreach asset,” said Mike O’Connell, the President and CEO of Irvine Ranch Conservancy. “Thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers, we’ve not only been able to produce the plant materials and seed needed for our restoration projects, but get the community involved and educate them along the way.”
