Skip the Gym and Get Fit on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks

Explore the great outdoors and register for fitness programs including hiking, yoga, Tai Chi and more!

As the weather begins to cool, skip the gym and head for the great outdoors on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Visitors can enjoy fresh air, exercise, and the local habitat by participating in a variety of activities offered on the open spaces. From hikes of all skill levels to yoga and Tai Chi programs, the community is invited to connect with nature during fitness programs on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks, many of which are free and open to the public with required preregistration.

“Temperatures are cooling and it’s the perfect time to explore the local lands during a fitness program,” Dave Raetz, Irvine Ranch Conservancy Deputy Director, said. “Whether joining a long-distance cardio hike or mild fitness walk, the Landmarks offer many different activities for nature lovers as young as 8 years old to enjoy. These programs offer the unique opportunity to engage in physical activity while getting acquainted with Orange County’s spectacular open spaces that are home to many rare and native species.”

Travel Through the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks by Saddle

Nature lovers can explore the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks by registering for hiking, biking, and interpretive programs, and outdoor enthusiasts who own or have access to a horse can saddle up and join the fun on the open spaces! A variety of equestrian programs welcome the community to trot through designated trails on the Landmarks, where rare and native species cohabitate in Southern California’s Mediterranean climate.
 
“The Landmarks are home to many diverse terrains, and equestrians can experience the lands by registering for programs throughout the year,” commented Dave Raetz, Deputy Director of Irvine Ranch Conservancy. “Riders are invited to bring their horse to the Landmarks during designated activities and take in some of Orange County’s most beautiful open spaces by saddle.”

Celebrate National Public Lands Day on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks

The Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks are home to many rare and native species across more than 40,000 acres of open space preserves, with designated areas open to the public for self-guided access and volunteer-led programs. In honor of National Public Lands Day, September 30, explore the open spaces in the City of Irvine, City of Newport Beach, and OC Parks by registering for an activity or enjoying designated trails. Connect with nature on National Public Lands Day and all month long on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks, and start your adventure today at the Turtle Ridge Trail in Bommer Canyon which offers 7 day access from dawn to dusk.

Join a Stewardship Program on the Landmarks in Honor of National Planting Day

Roll up your sleeves and help native plant life thrive by planting seedlings and weeding out invasive species.
 
Want to chip in during National Planting Day? Nature lovers can help care for Orange County’s opens spaces by joining a stewardship program on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Native plants are important to the natural habitat and provide food and shelter for other native species including mule deer, scrub jays, squirrels, bob cats, and a variety of insects among many others. Celebrate National Planting Day this Saturday and throughout the month by registering for a stewardship program on the Landmarks!
 
The first Saturday after Labor Day each September is dedicated to National Planting Day, which celebrates the critical importance of native plants and trees. This national call to action is designed to mobilize outdoor enthusiasts across the country and enhance biodiversity by rebuilding ecosystems and planting native species. There are several opportunities to volunteer on the Landmarks through stewardship programs, which welcome the community to enjoy fresh air while giving back to the lands.
