Weekly Hike Offers Choice of Distances

5/29/2015

Picture
A weekly fitness hike on paved Hicks Haul Road offers participants the choice between 3, 6 and 8-mile routes.

As spring gives way to summer, these next few weeks will be the last opportunity of the season to see colorful wildflowers, and one of the easiest places to look is along the Hicks Haul Road trail. The Tuesday Morning Fitness Hike on Paved Hicks Haul Road is a unique way to see parts of the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks while getting some great outdoor exercise. While the hike takes place on a paved road, the surrounding area is a protected natural habitat with plenty of opportunities to see active wildlife while you burn some calories.

Monthly nature walk in Baker Canyon offers the chance to listen to the natural sounds of the canyon.

Slowly walking along a meandering trail is a great way to shed away the day’s stresses. On Thursday, you can join a unique nature walk in OC Parks’ Black Star Canyon Wilderness Park that not only takes a slower pace, but also focuses on quiet enjoyment of nature’s noises. Take in the beauty of local wilderness while watching for soaring red-trailed hawks, listening to bird calls and inhaling the fragrance of the trailside sage plants during the “Shhh… Hike, Look and Listen” hike.  This monthly activity is designed to give participants the opportunity to hike quietly and meditatively while taking in the sounds of nature.

AmeriCorps Working in the Landmarks

5/15/2015

AmeriCorps workers are providing added labor to help sustain several ongoing habitat restoration projects.

One of the biggest challenges of overseeing habitat restoration projects on a large scale across the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks is having enough manpower during especially busy seasons. Harvesting, weeding and planting are often done by hand in sensitive habitats, and this season the efforts of Irvine Ranch Conservancy staff are being bolstered by a crew from AmeriCorps.

Seven AmeriCorps volunteers have been working full time to help keep stewardship projects moving forward. These members rotate around to various restoration areas in the Landmarks and work with Conservancy staff and volunteers to remove invasive weeds, to plant native seed and seedlings, and to help with harvesting at the Native Seed Farm. The AmeriCorps team is learning about our local habitats while they contribute to these projects.

Volunteering for stewardship and trail work activities not only helps the land, but benefits those who participate.

From the mountains to the sea, there are numerous places and ways to enjoy the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Many people visit for recreation or education programs, but many organizations offer volunteer opportunities to help people give back to local open space areas. Whether you want to spend an afternoon helping to plant acorns or volunteer regularly to help others enjoy the land, it’s easy – and rewarding – to volunteer.
