Learn about the field trip and kid-friendly activities the whole family can enjoy

From OC Parks’ geologic wonder, Limestone Canyon, to the City of Irvine’s expansive Bommer Canyon, the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks are home to diverse trail systems and natural habitat waiting to be explored by the community. The Landmarks provide outdoor enthusiasts of all ages a variety of opportunities to experience and connect with the lands.  Children as young as 8 have the chance to build a lifelong love and greater appreciation for nature through several different hiking, stewardship, and interpretive programs.

In honor of Earth Day, the Boys and Girls Club had the chance to explore nature in their backyard with a field trip to the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Sponsored by the Irvine Company and the Donald Bren Foundation, Irvine Ranch Conservancy hosted the field trip to give local 4th and 5th graders the opportunity to learn about habitat, native plants, and wildlife.

Connect with the lands by joining a stewardship program on the open spaces

Earth Day is quickly approaching and 2018 is a special year on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. This upcoming Earth Day marks the 10th anniversary of nearly 40,000 acres of open spaces being designated as the first-ever California Natural Landmark. Nature lovers can find several opportunities to connect with the land by registering for a stewardship program in honor of Earth Day and the 10th anniversary of the state landmark designation during the month of April and throughout the year.

Yet with human presence comes unavoidable impacts to the open spaces, whether recreating on the trails or restoring natural resources during stewardships.

On Earth Day in 2008, nearly 40,000 acres of open space on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks were designated as the first California Natural Landmark.  The designation came on the heels of a new state program that recognized the best examples of natural heritage. We are proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the designation this year, and look forward to celebrating many anniversaries to come thanks to the support of all the land owners, partners, volunteers, and the community.
