New Mountain Lion Cubs at the OC Zoo

3/30/2012

Two orphaned siblings will join other Southwest-native animals on exhibit.

This weekend, two mountain lion cubs will make their debut at the OC Zoo in Irvine Regional Park. Since the cubs’ arrival in December, zoo staff has been working with the cubs to prepare them for life at the zoo, including teaching them enrichment exercises and training them to make medical exams easier.

The 9-month-old sibling cubs were orphaned and rescued late last year, and could not have survived in the wild on their own. They join other rescued animals at the zoo that are native to Orange County, but are not suitable to be released into the wild.

Family-friendly restoration events teach kids about preserving OC wildlands.

Amid the sprawling oaks and blooming wildflowers in Limestone and Baker canyons lurks a prickly menace. An invasive weed called milk thistle threatens native plants and grasses that wildlife use for food and shelter. While widespread, milk thistle is easy to pull, and OC Parks is hosting a family-friendly event that will have kids showing milk thistle who’s boss.

Turn Loma Ridge Green on St. Patrick’s Day

3/2/2012

Restoration planting day planned for the community on March 17.

Restoring a natural plant habitat on St. Patrick’s Day – what could be more “green”? West Loma Ridge near Irvine Lake is the site of a 50-acre restoration project funded by OC Parks and managed by Irvine Ranch Conservancy. The public is invited to participate in bringing native plants back to this beautiful area during a “Get Green” planting event.

After preparing the ground, Conservancy staff and volunteers used the winter rain season to plant large-scale seeding on Loma Ridge. Now the ground is ready for seedling plugs, and the goal is to plant 3,000 seedlings on West Loma Ridge March 17, from 8:30 am to 1 pm. This is an optimum time for seedlings to be planted, before the weather gets too hot for the plants to get roots down to deeper soil moisture.
