Habitat Restoration in Irvine Supports Threatened Species

1/25/2013

The coastal cactus wren builds its nests in patches of old-growth prickly pear cactus, providing itself protection from predators. However, recent fires and past land uses have eliminated most of the mature cactus, which in turn threatens local cactus wren populations.

Organizations such as the non-profit Nature Reserve of Orange County, the City of Irvine and Irvine Ranch Conservancy are working together to expand the wren’s habitat, by connecting isolated patches of prickly pear cactus with each other to over time create a larger, contiguous habitat for the coastal cactus wren.

‘Love the Landmarks’ public photo contest will select best depiction of the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks.

Sometimes after a challenging climb up a strenuous trail takes your breath away, the view takes your breath away again. The amazing vistas and unique sights of Orange County’s only National Natural Landmark have inspired many to capture the view in a photograph. Those images will be given center stage during Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s “Love the Landmarks” Photo Contest.

The public contest seeks photos that reflect the locations within the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks, and the connections people have to them. The winner of the “Love the Landmarks” Photo Contest will be announced on Valentine’s Day, February 14. The winner will receive a 2013 OC Parks Combination Pass.

How to Start Hiking? Just Take it Easy.

Flat trails and slow-paced activities are the perfect way to start getting outdoors.

So you’re not quite ready to hit the hills, but you want to get out into the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks? Just take it easy. There are many easy trails to explore and activities held weekly to meet the needs of folks looking for a stroll outdoors or those who want to build up to more challenging hikes.

In the beautiful local wilderness, “easy” doesn't mean “boring.” Most birding programs are on easy trails and are slow-paced, with constant wildlife sightings and trained docents to identify your new feathered friends. Another popular easy trek is the Red Rocks Trail in Black Star Canyon (pictured). The wide trail is surrounded by lush native plants and wildlife, and docent-led hikes often include background on the geologic and natural history of the area. Wilderness Access Days are also a good way to get some assistance in choosing a hike that suits your abilities.

New web site listings highlight public outdoor volunteering opportunities.

While many people enjoy the natural surroundings of the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks, they may not know that it’s easy to help restore and protect local open spaces. The Irvine Ranch Conservancy maintains a website that shares information and activities available on the land, and now all opportunities for public volunteerism are highlighted on the site for easy access.

Habitat restoration, invasive weed removal, planting and seeding are just a few of the activities that are available for individuals or groups. To find these opportunities, visit www.LetsGoOutside.org/activities and look for activity titles that start with “Volunteer.” This tag will make it easy to scan the available outdoor activities and find opportunities to get involved in restoration programs. Visitors can click on the Event Title to sort alphabetically, then scroll down to find the activities that begin with “Volunteer.”
