Director of Finance & Accounting

 JOB TITLE:                           DIRECTOR OF FINANCE & ACCOUNTING
FLSA STATUS:                      Regular, Exempt, Full Time
REPORTS TO:                       Vice President & Chief Operations Officer
 
CORE FUNCTIONS:
 The Director of Finance & Accounting (Director) manages all accounting operations, process, and financial controls. The position manages all aspects of cash flow, expenses, investments, project/contract accounting, and forecasting. The Director oversees all financial statements and reports, leads the annual budgeting and financial planning process, and leads the annual audit and tax filings process. The position advises and leads on strategic and tactical financial decisions and works in partnership with the Conservancy’s treasurer and audit committee of the board of directors. A crucial function of the Director is to ensure the integrity and reliability of all financial statements, reports, and documents, and ensure appropriate fiscal governance and adherence to accounting principles, standards, and regulations.
 
The Director works successfully in a complex fund accounting environment with multiple ongoing projects/contracts and administrative activities that require clear tracking and analysis. The position effectively communicates complicated accounting and financial information to a variety of audiences, who may have varying levels of finance and accounting literacy, and represents the Conservancy in all matters related to finance and accounting. The Director provides expert support and guidance to the executive team and program leads regarding budgets and allocations, serves as a trusted expert resource to internal teams, and is responsible for assisting with development of long-term strategic plans and program budgets.
 
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance/accounting; 7+ years of related work experience or equivalent combination including broad financial management.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP (non-profit and for-profit) and fund accounting principles.
  • Successful experience with project/contract cost tracking and analysis, with an understanding of shared cost allocations to multiple ongoing projects/contracts and administrative activities.
  • Knowledge of non-profit financial practice such as budgeting, auditing, financial management, and reporting, as well as regulations highly desired.
  • Track record of successful contract financial management.
  • Successful experience managing appropriate investments for a non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated experience in MS Office software and Google platform. Financial database skills with ability to produce accurate and timely custom reports. Knowledge of accounting software; experience with Conservancy’s system (Financial Edge/Blackbaud) a plus.

  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to implement time management skills in a dynamic work environment.
  • Implement multiple projects with several variables, set and meet realistic deadlines, and manage a timeline.
  • Resolve problems both independently and collaboratively; resolve complex issues within and between functional areas; conduct follow-up as needed. Experiment to find creative solutions using existing resources before relying on supervisor.
  • Propose and implement policies and procedures to enhance overall long-term performance of the organization.

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
  • Make strategic decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgment. Duties may require non-routine analysis, resources, and follow-through.
  • Decisions and recommendations may have significant impact on the health and sustainability of the entire organization.
 
RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
  • Supervise accounting staff, temporary employees, and/or interns. Responsible for performance management, training, and development.
  • Provide a variety of financial information to colleagues, management, board of directors, and others to assist workflow and financial management throughout the organization.
  • Final responsibility and accountability for the quality and content of all financial data, accounting records, transaction processing, reporting, and audit coordination for the organization.
  • Responsible for maintaining comprehensive financial controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk.
 
COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
  • Highly service-oriented demeanor and a cooperative, problem-solving orientation. Consistently demonstrate a positive and approachable attitude.
  • Excellent communication and long-term relationship skills with ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external partners.
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to, and effectively communicate and collaborate with, program colleagues and partners who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate excellent discretion and strictest sensitivity with confidential and financial information.
  • Familiarity with standard business communications; ability to draft and edit correspondence and other written materials, including analytical summaries and reports, policies and procedures, and vendor documents.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • Work requires only occasional minor physical exertion and/or strain.
  • Able to work extended hours during tight deadline periods.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position up to 75% of the time.
  • Repetitive motion: Substantial movement (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
